We Made Another List!

Thank you so much @FooBooz at PhillyMag.com for the mention! Honored to be apart of this list along with 17 other amazing Philly restaurants.

“After operating as a truck throughout the city, Rebecca Baez and Omar Martínez finally opened up a brick-and-mortar in Fishtown in the spring of 2022. Now this family-owned spot is serving up tortas and tacos within a stone’s throw of the neighborhood’s main strip, which is reason enough to support them. But their Mexican food is also fresh and flavorful, especially the vegan tinga tacos and the tacos de suadero. 413 East Girard Avenue.

More Tacos for Fishtown and an Aussie Bakery for the ‘Burbs

We’ve got a double-shot of good news this week with two new openings to announce — both of which have me very excited.

First, the pop-up Mexican food cart La Chingonita has been working the streets for about a year now, but they took to Instagram last week to announce that they’d be moving into permanent digs in Fishtown in the near future.

Owners Rebecca Baez and Omar Martinez will be taking over the space at 413 East Girard Street that used to be home to Sketch Burger. They’re looking at having things up and running by the end of the year (if all goes according to plan), and will be serving a menu very similar to the one that made their cart so popular.

Meanwhile, out in West Chester, True Blue Bakery, a serious Australian bakery and pie operation, is packing up their gear and moving to Royersford. They’ll be opening sometime in the next few weeks at 324 Main Street, offering Australian meat pies, pasties, sausage rolls, tiny little apple and cherry pies, lemon meringue tarts and something called “mustard dogs” which are basically cheese dogs with mustard wrapped inside puff pastry — all of which is very dangerous for someone like me who now lives relatively close to a joint selling sausage rolls and pastry-wrapped cheese dogs right out the front door.

And these folks know what they’re doing, too. Two homesick Aussies with decades of baking experience, stranded in Pennsylvania and handling their blues by baking authentic meat pies and pastries to remind them of home.

I’m thinking about just camping out in front of the place now. Anyone want to join me?

Pop Up Taco Cart La Chingonita To Open Brick And Mortar Location

Owners and chefs Rebecca Baez and Omar Martinez will finally be opening up a brick-and-mortar version of their popular pop-up taco cart at 413 East Girard Avenue in Fishtown. The plan has been in the works since the fall of last year, but the restaurant is going to become a reality in the near future.

The current pop-up menu will be the main menu for the restaurant as they open. You’ll see all the favorites, like the classic tacos: with chicken, carnitas, steak, and chorizo, the specialty tacos: shrimp, beef birria, al pastor, and tinga vegana, or the vegan version of the tinga taco that is usually made with chicken or beef and a red sauce. The tinga vegana uses oyster mushrooms. The restaurant will also add tortas, a Mexican-style sandwich, churros, and daily specials. As for drinks, the restaurant will not serve alcohol but will have Aguas Frescas like limonadas, horchata, and agua de jamaica which is a sweet hibiscus drink.

The owners told What Now Philadelphia, when we reached them by phone, that they also hope to start offering breakfast items “after we get into the swing of things” and that their planned hours of operation will be 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Philly Gets Two New Mexican Restaurants This Week

La Chingonita opens a permanent location in Fishtown

A couple of months ago, we got word that the team behind La Chingonita food truck was working on a brick-and-mortar in Fishtown. Well the time has finally come: Owners Rebecca Baez and Omar Martinez took to Instagram last week to announce that they’ve opened their space at 413 East Girard Street (formerly Sketch Burger). Tuesday is the grand opening. They’ve got tacos, tacos and more tacos on the board, elote (the perfect summer food), quesadillas and burritos — a simple, tight menu that made the truck so popular. Here’s hoping it works for the home base, too.

La Chingonita Finds a Permanent Home in Fishtown

A new Mexican restaurant is coming to Fishtown and its reputation proceeds itself. If by now you haven’t tried the grub from La Chingonita, soon you will. La Chingonita which operated as a food cart since September of 2020, will officially open their brick-and-mortar location at 413 E. Girard (former location of Sketch Burger).

Owners Rebecca Baez and Omar Martínez form a husband and wife team and linked up with Jean Paul Viera of Fishtown Real Estate to bring their drams to reality.  The team looks to open the Fishtown location by the end of the year which will include seating up to 30 people.

“This is our first restaurant of our very own! We moved to Philly from NYC in 2019. There’s years of restaurant experience between the both of us, we actually met working at a Tex Mex restaurant in Union Square, NYC where I (Rebecca), was the Executive Chef and Omar was the Sous Chef. Omar was offered a position as Chef de Cuisine of another Mexican restaurant here in Philly which is why we moved. It didn’t end up working out due to COVID as well as other reasons but it was a blessing in disguise because otherwise we would have never bought our cart,” Rebecca states.

So what can guests expect? “Guests can expect a similar menu to our cart (we’d never get rid of our regulars’ faves!) but we are not limited to just tacos. Having this space allows us to really get creative and introduce people to our takes on other traditional Mexican and Caribbean dishes.” Omar originally hails from Mexico City but Rebecca is Puerto Rican so you can expect some hints of Boricua flavors in their dishes. “Our goal is to make our place feel like our home and our guests are our friends and family we invite over for a delicious meal. We also plan on inviting other chefs to collab with us (we love pop ups),” Rebecca adds

Their popular Birria Tacos will definitely be one of the highlights of their new location. Other dishes on the menu include   classic chorizo tacos and Tinga Vegana tacos which is their vegan taco made from Shredded Oyster mushrooms. La Chingonita has plans to expand their vegan options at the restaurant as well.

Currently La Chingonita is still operating as a pop-up food cart with various hours but you can usually catch them during lunch hours (12-4pm)at The Matchbook in East Kensington.  However, the culinary duo is definitely excited about their new home in Fishtown, “We love Fishtown! We moved here about two and a half years ago. The community is so welcoming and supportive. Honestly can’t think of a better neighborhood to open up shop,” Rebecca adds. – Hec, Wooder Ice
